Farmers suffering under tariffs against China, lawmaker says

Kiplinger

DETROIT, MI (MPRN)--   Some Michigan members of the U.S. Senate say they fear the Trump administration’s increased tariffs on Chinese imports will hit U.S. farmers especially hard.

Democratic lawmakers say farmers will face higher prices at a time when they can least afford it.

President Trump is imposing 25 percent tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.    He says China is reneging on agreements it had already committed to.

China vows to retaliate.

But the ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee, Michigan’s Debbie Stabenow, says U.S. farmers are literally paying the price for the ongoing trade war.

“We sell soybeans to China. And our farmers are hurting… they’ve lost markets not only with China, but Mexico… there’s issues with Canada… so what I don’t see is a strategic plan,” she says.

Trump tweeted that his administration will buy U-S agricultural products in “larger amounts than China ever did” and use them for humanitarian aid.
