Fatal snowmobile accident in Rock River Township

ROCK RIVER TOWNSHIP, MI--   Two people are reported dead in a snowmobile accident in Alger County.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Monday around 9:25 p.m. on Trail #8 about a mile north of Samuelson Road in Rock River Township. They say two snowmobiles were involved in a head-on collision, causing both drivers to be ejected from their machines.

Both operators were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names are being withheld pending notification of family members.

Excessive speed is believed to be the cause of the accident, which remains under investigation.

Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue 21, Rock River Fire Department, Rock River 1st Responders and Valley Med flight assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
