GOP preps action to reverse Whitmer vetoes

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Governor Gretchen Whitmer is expected to meet Thursday with the Legislature’s Republican and Democratic leaders.

Michigan Public Radio’s Rick Pluta reports Republicans set the stage for a showdown over 147 line-item budget vetoes.

Republicans have drafted new budget bills to restore many of those vetoes.

Amber McCann is the press secretary for state Senate Republicans. She says many of the vetoes target human services – and the vetoes are opposed by many Democrats as well as Republicans. She says these new bills would force the governor to decide whether to reverse her decisions, or to live with the results.

“We want to be very clear what we’re restoring, and whether or not she supports it.”

The governor’s press secretary says she is open to further discussions on her vetoes and on setting spending priorities – including a tax increase to raise new money for roads.
