Ishpeming Police save man's life with Narcan

ISHPEMING, MI--   Ishpeming Police say an anti-overdose drug saved the life of a man at a city business on Wednesday.

Around 10:40 p.m. officers were dispatched to the Holiday gas station on US-41 on a report of an unresponsive male. Upon arrival they found a man with a needle in his hand slumped over the bathroom toilet. Officers began CPR when they saw he wasn’t breathing.

Through police training the officers recognized the situation as a possible drug overdose and administered Narcan to the subject. The man’s breathing returned and he eventually regained consciousness. He was taken to UPHS Marquette for treatment.

Narcan is an antidote for opiates that blocks their effects and reverses an overdose. It will have no effect if given to a person who has not taken opioids.

Ishpeming officers have been carrying Narcan for about a year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
