Man barely escapes Stambaugh house fire

STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MI--   An Iron County man has been seriously injured in a house fire.

Tuesday around 12:20 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Little Deer Road in Stambaugh Township and found the structure fully engulfed.

A witness reported the lone occupant of the home was seen exiting the burning building.

Johnathan Zawislak, 39, of Iron River was taken to Iron River Aspirus hospital, then transferred to the Duluth Burn Unit for treatment of serious burns.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The state Fire Marshal has been contacted about the incident.

Assisting at the scene were the West Iron Fire Department, the Crystal Falls, Caspian-Gaastra, and Long Lake fire departments, the Iron River Police Department, and Iron County Central Dispatch.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
