Marquette prison awash in coronavirus

MARQUETTE, MI--   More than half of the inmates at the Marquette Branch Prison have tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 981 prisoners tested, 516 were lab-confirmed. Officials say 507 of those cases are considered active.

As of Monday evening 117 prison staff had also tested positive for the coronavirus. Those numbers are highest of any prison in Michigan.

Sources say more than 200 low-level prisoners have been transferred to the Newberry Correctional Facility, which contains 52 active cases within the inmate population. Ten Newberry staff have tested positive.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
