NEWBERRY, MI-- A Luce County deputy was involved in a shooting early Tuesday morning.
Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post say the deputy was investigating a possible breaking and entering at the Newberry Water and Light Plant when he saw a suspicious vehicle in the area. The deputy made contact with the driver, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
The driver wouldn’t provide his driver’s license or registration, and when he reached into his pocket the deputy tried to stop him. The suspect struck the officer several times in the face and sped off with the deputy still partially inside, dragging him a short distance. The deputy was able to draw his gun and fired shots at the driver, who fled the scene.
The suspect was located Tuesday afternoon and is in custody.
