More cougar sightings in UP

Michael Hilliard

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says two more trail camera photos of a cougar have been confirmed in the Upper Peninsula over the past couple of months.

One was taken in northern Delta County on September 18 and the other in southern Marquette County on October 6. The cameras are located about 14 miles apart.

With these sightings the DNR has verified 43 cougar reports since 2008. Five were confirmed this year. The DNR says the reports could include multiple sightings of the same animal, not necessarily 43 different cats. Biologists say there’s no conclusive evidence of a breeding population in the state.

The cougar – or mountain lion – is a protected species in Michigan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
