MTU testing for the coronavirus

HOUGHTON, MI--   Michigan Technological University has started testing for COVID-19.

Tech has partnered with local hospitals to offer the testing, which can get a result within hours. Previous tests had to be sent downstate and results could take a week or more.

The new lab has the capacity to test up to 40 samples per hour on two machines. More equipment and staffing are already planned.

State labs have helped verify the accuracy and protocols of the Tech facility.

The university is also working on vaccine technology and technology to clean personal protective equipment.
