Names released in Alger County crash

AuTRAIN TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person remains hospitalized following a crash with a semi in Alger County’s AuTrain Township. 

Thursday around 4:30 p.m. David Rinker, 47, of Munising was on M-94 near Forest Lake Road when he tried to make a U-turn from the westbound to the eastbound lane.  As he turned his minivan was struck on the driver’s side by a westbound semi-tractor driven by Steve White, 50, of downstate Cedar Springs. 

Rinker’s son Jacob, 14, was a passenger in the minivan.  He was taken to U.P. Health System Marquette by ambulance, while David Rinker was airlifted to the hospital by UPHSM Life Flight.  Jacob Rinker was treated and released.  David Rinker remains hospitalized for his injuries. 

White was not injured in the crash.  David Rinker was cited for careless driving.

Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by AuTrain and Rock River Fire Departments.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
