NMU makes adjustments according to COVID-19 expectations

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University administration has had to make some decisions in light of the extension of federal social distancing guidelines to April 30.

President Fritz Erickson says Michigan’s end date is April 13, but it’s realistic to expect that it will be moved back.

He says there will be no on-campus, in-person instruction for classes or labs for the first summer session, and faculty and students should be ready for distance learning in session II, if necessary. Officials are also discussing options for first-year and transfer student orientations if they can’t be held in May, June, or early July.

Students will likely have more time to get their belongings from residence halls and apartments. The original end date was May 3, but that might be extended, given what’s happening statewide.

And a plan to renovate NMU’s career-tech and engineering facility at the Jacobetti Center is on hold for the time being. Money for the project was among $80 million vetoed by Governor Whitmer in order to better fund the battle against COVID-19 in Michigan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
