Norlite residents get connected thanks to NMU laptops

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University has donated 24 laptop computers to the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.

The refurbished ThinkPads will allow residents—who have been isolated in their rooms since mid-March—to communicate with friends and family.

Norlite activities director Amy Fraley says before the pandemic, residents could participate in up to 21 activities per day. They have since been unable to interact with fellow residents. Those without computers were excluded from Skype or Zoom, or from participating in online activities.

US Senator Debbie Stabenow’s office was made aware of the issue and reached out to see if there was any way NMU could assist.

The laptops were delivered to Norlite Thursday afternoon.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
