One in critical condition after three saved from Lake Michigan in Manistique

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The Manistique Public Safety Department saved some vacationing swimmers from Lake Michigan Thursday.

The department was dispatched around 5:36 p.m. to US-2 and Range Street.  When they arrived they were told three swimmers were struggling in the high waves.

Witnesses say when two young boys started having trouble in the water their father went into the lake to help.  All three were rescued by officers and EMS personnel.

The boys were not injured.  Their father was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to UP Health System Marquette in critical condition.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
