One person taken to the hospital following Hancock crash

HANCOCK, MI--   Two people had to be extricated from their car, following a two-vehicle crash in Hancock Thursday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 11:50 a.m. at Campus Drive and US-41. A Buick driven by 83-year-old Barbara Holmes of Kent, Washington failed to yield at the intersection at Campus Drive. She tried to make a left turn onto US-41 and hit a southbound car driven by 67-year-old Cecelia Erickson of Hancock.

Erickson’s vehicle veered out of control, rolled onto its roof, and came to rest on its side. She and her 77-year-old passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. They were not injured.

Holmes was taken to UPHS-Portage for treatment of minor injuries.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
