Police investigate Ely Township crash

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident on County Road CD in Ely Township Monday.

State Police from the Negaunee Post say it happened around 9 a.m. just south of County Road PPX.  A Chevy Silverado driven by Damien Desjardins-Racine, 20, of Marquette was southbound when he lost control on a curve.  The vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and encountered a GMC Sierra driven by Jacob Harvala, 62, of Ishpeming.  Harvala tried to avoid a crash by swerving right, but the two vehicles side-swiped each other before Harvala’s vehicle ran off the roadway and struck some trees.

Harvala was taken to UP Health System Marquette for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Desjardins-Racine wasn’t injured.  He was, however, found to be at fault in the accident and ticketed for speeding.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
