Police report fatal accident in Houghton County

CALUMET TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person has been killed in a single-vehicle crash in Calumet Township.

It happened Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. on US-41 near #4 Road in Centennial Heights. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says a Blazer was northbound when the driver went off the paved portion of the road and hit the gravel shoulder. The 65-year-old Houghton man then overcorrected the vehicle, which went back on the paved roadway, slid sideways, and rolled over.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt and sustained only minor injuries. His passenger, a 77-year-old Houghton man, was not and was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, the Laurium Police Department, the Michigan DNR, Calumet Township Fire and Rescue, Mercy Ambulance, and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
