Shingleton business owner thwarts robbery

SHINGLETON, MI--   A 17-year-old Shingleton male and 18-year-old Munising man are in custody following the attempted break-in of a Shingleton business.

Sunday around 4:10 a.m. troopers from the Munising Detachment were called to the Oasis Gas Station for a B&E in progress.

Police say two suspects in ski masks forced their way in and went to the cash register, unaware that owner Shawn Schank was in the back.   Schank—a veteran of the Iraq war—ran at the suspects and kicked one of them to the floor.  He then retrieved an AR-15 assault rifle and ordered the men to leave.

One of the suspects peeled his mask off and pleaded with Schank not to shoot him.  The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

Schank was able to identify one of the men.  Investigation led to the arrest of the other suspect.  Both remain lodged in the Alger County Jail on a charge of breaking and entering.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
