U.P. towns get money to fix roads

MARQUETTE, MI--   Three small U.P. communities are getting grants to help fund road projects.

The money comes from the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Community Service Infrastructure Fund. Successful projects were selected because they’re paired with planned infrastructure work, coordinated with other road agencies, focused on extending the useful life of the road, and lacked other funding sources.

The Village of Laurium is getting $75,000 to repair Old Colony Road; The City of Stephenson has been awarded $85,000 to update Section Street; and the City of Caspian will receive $75,000 to fix West Fourth Street.

The communities must provide a 50 percent match for each project.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
