MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI-- From the Michigan Department of Transportation:
The traffic configuration is set to change in the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) work zone on the US-41/M-28 reconstruction and roundabouts project in Marquette Township.
Tentatively beginning Wednesday, Oct. 30, eastbound and westbound traffic at the new roundabouts at Brickyard Road and CR 492 will be shifted to the outside lane. US-41/M-28 traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction at these points.
Additional lane closures and shifts may be necessary during the next several days while permanent pavement markings are applied. Permanent sign installation will also be in progress. This work is weather-dependent.
Motorists should expect increased delay times and backups as lane restrictions go into effect. Please drive with caution in the work zone and pay attention to all traffic control devices.
The winter traffic configuration for the project is expected to be in place by Wednesday, Nov. 6. At that time, both lanes of the roundabouts will be open and two lanes of traffic on US-41/M-28 will be open in each direction. The project will then be suspended for the winter, with median work, vegetation planting, landscaping, and other items to be completed next spring.
MDOT is reconstructing US-41/M-28 between CR 492 to just west of Brickyard Road, extending the existing boulevard. The project includes replacing signalized intersections with roundabouts at Brickyard Road and at CR 492 near Walmart and Target, along with constructing indirect left-turn lanes, or Michigan Lefts. A new multi-use tunnel will be constructed beneath the highway, just west of CR 492. The investment for the road work is estimated at $8.5 million, with another $2.4 million estimated for the multi-use trail and tunnel.
