Two UP airports get millions for improvements

DETROIT, MI--   U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) today announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) will be awarding Sawyer International Airport in Gwinn $4,664,280 and Delta County Airport in Escanaba $4,063,469.

These Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants will go towards rehabilitating the hangar at Sawyer International Airport and reconstructing runway lighting at Delta County Airport.

“Safe and reliable air travel is critical to keeping communities across the UP connected to important markets and destinations, not only during this pandemic but in the years ahead,” said Senator Peters, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. “I’m pleased to announce this federal grant, which will help bolster infrastructure at Sawyer International Airport and Delta County Airport.”

“Investing in Delta County and Sawyer International Airports will support economic development and tourism in the region,” said Senator Stabenow. “This funding will protect the safety of our flyers and encourage businesses to invest in the region and create jobs.”
