MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post and Marquette County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a missing kayaker on Lake Michigamme.

Officers were notified Monday around 8 p.m. Melanie McKelvey, 41, of St. Louis, Missouri was last seen Monday afternoon leaving a cabin on the southwest shore of the lake in a red kayak. She was paddling northeast.

McKelvey was wearing a black jacket and dark green boots.

Deputies and DNR conservation officers searched the water by boat. Marquette County Search and Rescue searched the roadways around Lake Michigamme and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter flew to Marquette County but was unable to search due to inclement weather.

Also assisting in the search are troopers from the Calumet Post, canine handlers from the Calumet and Iron Mountain posts, and the Michigamme Township Fire Department.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
