U.P. volunteers gathering signatures for pot initiative

MARQUETTE, MI--   Supporters of an initiative to legalize marijuana in Michigan gathered at the Superior Dome in Marquette over the weekend.

Volunteers will work to get signatures from residents throughout the U.P. to put the MI Legalize initiative on the 2016 ballot.

Among other things the initiative would legalize all forms of marijuana for those 21 and older; allow adults to cultivate up to 12 plants; create a 10-percent excise tax on pot sales for other than medicinal use and designate where the funds will go; and provide licensing to marijuana establishments and cultivation facilities.

Initiative proponents say it will bring money to local economies.
