State, local club to manage ATV trail in Copper Country

HOUGHTON, MI--   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is partnering with an all-terrain vehicle club to manage a 54-mile stretch of trail in the western Upper Peninsula.

The DNR says the management partnership with the Keweenaw ATV Club will bring broader access to recreation opportunities and consistent maintenance of the trail, which runs through parts of Houghton and Keweenaw counties. It's mostly on private land from Calumet to Copper Harbor.

The Keweenaw ATV Trail agreement was signed during this month's Natural Resources Commission meeting in Ontonagon.

The club has permission from private property owners to manage a limited trail corridor that will be recognized and designated by the state as a restricted off-road vehicle route. It will keep the trail maintained.

The DNR will develop a trail map and promote the trail.
