U.P. sled dogs finding it hard to train

SKANDIA, MI--   Cold temperatures and heavy snowfall are causing a hold up on dog sled training in the U.P.

WLUC-TV reports the wintry weather has altered training for the next couple of weeks at Team Evergreen Kennel in Skandia. Lisa Dietzen, a musher, uses an all-terrain vehicle to begin training her sled dog teams in September. She says the early snowfall has caused some of the less experienced dogs to forget some of their training.

The team has had difficulty grooming a trail on their property as well. Dietzen says the company's snowmobile trail won't open for about two more weeks, when gun season ends.

The dogs have also been working harder and consuming more food because of the weather.

A several-day storm last week brought up to 42.5 inches of snow in the Upper Peninsula.
