LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Michigan High School Athletic Association says competition can begin Aug. 19 and 21 for golf, tennis and cross country, but it has held off on allowing the start of football, volleyball and soccer games during the coronavirus pandemic. 

The group said Wednesday it will make decisions about competition timelines for football, volleyball and soccer by Aug. 20.

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   The Michigan High School Athletic Association says its unique sideline concussion testing program for athletes in football and other sports is having a positive impact but long-term funding is an issue as it heads into its second and final year. 

Executive Director Jack Roberts says member schools in its pilot program removed players for possible concussions at a higher rate than schools that were not.

ISHPEMING, MI--   Ishpeming High School football and basketball player Eric Dompierre’s story is more than heroic; it could win his school thousands of dollars from Sports Illustrated.

The 19-year-old with Down’s syndrome and his father petitioned the Michigan High School Athletic Association to let him play sports past the age of 18.  This year the MHSAA granted his request. 

ISHPEMING, MI--   The mayor of Ishpeming has declared Thursday, October 18, 2012 “Eric Dompierre Day.” 

The 19-year-old with Down syndrome recently was granted a waiver to play football and basketball at Ishpeming High School even though the rules said he was too old.  Eric and his family waged a campaign, and member schools of the Michigan High School Athletic Association voted to approve waivers in certain circumstances. 

ISHPEMING, MI--   A 19-year-old Ishpeming student with Down syndrome is expected to find out this week whether he'll be able to play sports during his senior year in high school.

A decision on a waiver for Eric Dompierre is expected Wednesday by the Michigan High School Athletic Association. Schools in Michigan earlier this year voted in favor of lifting the age limit for sports eligibility under certain circumstances.

ISHPEMING, MI--   High schools in Michigan have voted to allow a waiver of the maximum age for students to participate in interscholastic athletics.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Thursday that its member schools approved an amendment to the organization's constitution that would allow for the waiver under certain circumstances.
