ESCANABA, MI (AP)-- A summertime bike-sharing program in Escanaba and Gladstone has become a popular way to get around for residents and tourists.
The Daily Press of Escanaba reports that the free Yellow Bike Program began in Escanaba in 2011 and expanded to Gladstone in 2012. It typically lasts from June to September.
Kristi Steger is a health educator for Delta and Menominee counties, which partnered with local bike shops to start it. She says a one-time grant was used to buy and maintain bikes. About 13 bikes are available for checkout in Escanaba and 11 are available in Gladstone.
She estimates bikes have been checked out 300 times in Escanaba and 100 times in Gladstone so far this season.
