Moose photo opportunities create safety hazards in UP

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   State wildlife officials say some motorists in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are creating a safety hazard by stopping along roads to take pictures of moose.

The Department of Natural Resources says moose have been spotted regularly in recent weeks along a section of U.S. highway 41 in western Marquette County. Sightings also have been reported on other highways.

Conservation officers say they've seen people stopping in traffic lanes, making illegal U-turns and opening doors into traffic in their haste to grab a photo. People have also gotten out of their cars and dashed across roads as other vehicles whiz by.

DNR spokesman John Pepin says it can be exciting to see a moose, but spectators need to keep safety in mind.

The Upper Peninsula is believed to have about 500 moose.
