Western UP moose numbers remain steady

MARQUETTE, MI— The moose population in the western U.P. has remained relatively stable since 2019.

Thursday, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said the population estimate isn’t statistically different from the last survey conducted four years ago.

The DNR has been surveying the core population since 1997, typically every other winter. The 2023 survey marks the first one completed since 2019 due to conflicts associated with the COVID pandemic. The DNR found 426 individuals this year, compared to 509 moose in 2019.

The western U.P. moose core range covers about 1,400 square miles in parts of Marquette, Baraga, and Iron counties.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
