"Cat Packs" fundraiser will feed hungry kids

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is selling cookies to raise funds for its “Cat Packs” program.

The NMU Student Enrichment Office is partnering with the Salvation Army to stuff 70 packs per week with food for students at North Star Academy in Marquette.

Tamara Hunter is a graduate student at NMU. She says oftentimes students go hungry over weekends and holidays. The packs help tide the students over until they get back to school.

Hunter says they try to include healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, along with other items.

“We also put in other meals that we think that the kids might like, like mac and cheese. We make sure that they have breakfast, so oatmeal or cereal. We try to do a Chex mix—like a little snack for the kids,” she says.

Hunter says local bakeries and NMU’s Simply Superior and Dining Services are donating cookies to the effort. They’ll be sold by the dozen, and all revenue will be used to buy more food for Cat Packs. Any cookies that are left will be sold at the TV6 Craft Show.

Hunter says preorder forms may be obtained at Northern’s University Center, room 1205. They must be returned by November 28. Volunteers will also be distributing cookies December 6th at the University Center’s Back Room from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
