Invasives added to state watch list

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (MPRN)--   Two new invasive species have been added to Michigan’s watch list.

The state has added the spotted lanternfly and a Japanese chaff flower to the list.

Joanne Foreman is with the Department of Natural Resources. She says a risk analysis of both species shows they could spread into the state.

“With the spotted lanternfly the concern initially is agricultural. It likes grapes, it likes fruit, and it also likes hops, and that’s a blooming industry here in Michigan.”

Foreman says the bug has been spreading in Pennsylvania and has the potential to reach Michigan.

The Chaff Flower has been spotted along the Ohio river.
