HOUGHTON, MI-- Michigan Tech is unveiling its Maritime Autonomy Research Site this week.
MARS is the first freshwater testbed of its kind in the world. It will allow technology developers, researchers, resources managers and others to collaborate in meeting the future needs of marine technology development.
The MARS unveiling takes place Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center.
The event coincides with the launch of the Smart Ships Coalition, designed to study and set ground rules for the use of autonomous marine vehicles in the Great Lakes. Coalition members say marine technology lags behind that of air and ground operations. They’re looking to learn from those industries to further marine technology.
