U.P. benefits from federal justice grants

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Governor Rick Snyder says that criminal justice agencies in Michigan are sharing $6 million in federal grants for anti-drug and anti-crime efforts.   

Snyder said the grants announced Monday come through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program and the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners program.

In the U.P., the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team has been awarded

$193,364 for multijurisdictional task forces and the Menominee Police Department has been given $20,000 to enhance school safety. 

Byrne grants are named in honor of New York City police officer Edward Byrne.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
