Missing man found deceased in Houghton County

LAIRD TOWNSHIP, MI--   The body of a missing Houghton County man with dementia has been found in Laird Township.

Howard Maki, 80, of Alston was last seen June 7 in Hancock. He was driving an Isuzu Trooper. On Friday the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office found Maki’s vehicle on snowmobile trail #109 about an eighth of a mile south of the Alston cemetery in Laird Township. It had a flat tire and no one was inside.

A number of law enforcement and rescue agencies launched a search for Maki. At about 1:15 p.m. Sunday officials found his body approximately 1¾ miles southwest of where his vehicle was located. It appeared he had been at that location for several days.

The cause of death remains under investigation, but foul play has been ruled out for now.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
