The Escanaba Public Library is pleased to welcome Judge Steve Parks for a special author talk celebrating the release of his debut novel, The Serenity Gang. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 7 at 5:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
At age 70, Parks is fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a published author. He began writing "The Serenity Gang" in 2019, inspired by the 50th anniversary of Woodstock and the enduring spirit of the generation that came of age in the 1960s and ’70s.
“It’s about letting go of the past so you can live for the future,” Parks explained. “Each character has their own regrets and obstacles to happiness, but together, they help each other move forward.”
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Escanaba Public Library.

Maps are a valuable tool for seeing history at work. Maps have been used as an aid to all types of transportation from steamboat routes to today’s single track bike trails. They are also used as a marketing tool, for reference, and entertainment. View maps of the Great Lakes and Marquette County. See how mapmakers have sometimes misled their viewers and how our landscape and surroundings have changed. Morocco is well known for its exotic locations like Casablanca and Marrakesh, and the Sahara’s presence is always part of the story. However, beyond the desert are mountains and fertile lands. And, of course, there is a wonderful collection of birds to see. Join Don Burlett, Board Member of the Oakland Bird Alliance, via Zoom in the Heritage Room of the Peter White Public Library, as we explore this fascinating country and see what it has to offer.
Don was a research scientist working in the rubber industry for almost 40 years, having retired in 2016. He has been an avid birder since he was a young boy (started off on his own without assistance). He has birded on all 7 continents and 50 countries and all 50 states. He loves to bird and travel and is also very active in helping others learn about birding and the environment.
