Sentence handed down to killer of Iron Mountain resident in '08

MARINETTE, WI--   Seven years after Iron Mountain resident Eric Volp’s body was found in Wisconsin, his killer has been sentenced.

Erik Smith, 33, pleaded guilty in June to hit and run involving death, hiding a corpse, and homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.

Officials say Smith and Volp left an Iron Mountain bar October 10, 2008 and got into an argument in Smith’s vehicle.  When Volp got out of the car, police say Smith ran him over, put his body in the trunk, and dumped the body in a stream near Dunbar, Wisconsin.

Smith was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison.  He’ll serve the term after he completes his current 19-year sentence for possession of child pornography in a Colorado prison.  Smith has also been ordered to 20 years of extended supervision after prison and must pay $12,000 in restitution.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
