Newberry attempted murder suspect identified

NEWBERRY, MI--   Officials have released the name of the suspect in a Newberry attempted murder case.

Last Thursday around 7 p.m. Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post investigated an assault at a residence in the village. The victim said a man—now identified as Keith Craig, 64—broke into his home, fired several shots at him, and struck him with the firearm.

Craig was located at his residence later that night and arrested around 2:20 a.m. after several hours of negotiation with police. He’s charged with assault with intent to murder, 1st-degree home invasion, and committing a felony with a firearm.

Craig remains lodged in the Luce County Jail on a $500,000 bond. A probable cause conference is set for May 1.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
