Recorded Social Security scam making the rounds, police say

CALUMET, MI--   Michigan State Police say residents are complaining about phone messages supposedly from the Social Security Administration.

Troopers from the Calumet Post say in most cases a pre-recorded message is left on answering machines or voicemail with a phone number and warnings the resident must call back immediately. The message says the resident’s Social Security number has been associated with a drug seizure or some other criminal activity.

Troopers say the calls do not originate from the Social Security Administration and are likely an attempt at identity theft. They remind the public to be wary of unsolicited calls or mailings they receive. Do not give out or verify any personal information, hang up on the caller and do not respond to messages.
