TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)-- A U.S.-Canadian panel is inviting public comment on a report it commissioned about Great Lakes water levels.
The International Joint Commission advises both nations' governments on boundary waters issues. It established an expert panel to investigate whether efforts should be made to prevent swings in Great Lakes levels with measures such as changing outflows from Lake Superior or placing structures at choke points such as the St. Clair River.
The report was released earlier this year. It recommended against large-scale engineering projects to keep levels stable, saying people in the region should adapt to nature's ups and downs.
The international commission will accept comments at a series of hearings around the Great Lakes region that begin Monday and continue through July 17. The first is in Sarnia, Ontario.
