LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant and Attorney General Bill Schuette are co-chairing a multi-agency task force to examine the pipelines that transport petroleum products in the state.
In a statement Thursday, they say that the "vast network of lines transporting petroleum products over and under Michigan has the potential to impact Michigan's environment and communities."
They say that calls for a state role beyond that of the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, which oversees interstate gas and oil pipelines.
An Enbridge Incorporated pipeline spilled more than 800,000 gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River system in 2010.
The Great Lakes Petroleum Pipeline Task Force also includes the Michigan Public Service Commission, Department of Natural Resources, Office of the Great Lakes, Department of Transportation, and state police.
