LANSING, MI (AP)-- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is offering permits for cutting wood in state forests to use as fuel this winter.
They allow collection of up to five standard cords of wood per household from designated state forest land in the northern two-thirds of Michigan.
Fuel wood collected with a permit is for personal use only and cannot be resold or traded. The permits are good for 90 days but all will expire Dec. 31.
Forest Resources Division Chief Bill O'Neill says burning wood is an economical way to heat homes, cabins and hunting camps. The DNR typically issues 2,500 to 3,500 permits a year.
