LANSING, MI (AP)-- A Canadian company seeking to develop a limestone mining operation in the Eastern Upper Peninsula is offering to pay more money for use of state-owned land.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says it has received an updated application from Graymont Inc., which wants mining privileges on about 10,360 acres in Mackinac County.
Under the plan, Graymont would pay 30 cents for each ton of extracted limestone, up from its previous offer of 18.75 cents per ton. The royalties would be deposited into the State Parks Endowment Fund.
The company also says it would develop a fund to benefit local governments, schools and small businesses.
DNR Director Keith Creagh says he's delaying a decision until March 19 at the earliest so the department and the public can review the updated plan.
