Researchers to study adapting to Great Lakes ups, downs

ANN ARBOR, MI (AP)--   U.S. and Canadian researchers will use funding from the University of Michigan to help shoreline communities deal with changes in Great Lakes water levels.

The university's Graham Sustainability Institute has awarded seven research teams grants of $10,000 each.

The teams will examine strategies that could be used for adapting to water level fluctuations. They'll consider factors such as property values, erosion, the effects of climate change and the need for education and resiliency planning.

Later this year, four or five teams will be chosen to proceed with a detailed 18-month project. They'll receive about $50,000 each to help communities identify practical options for reducing the negative effects of the Great Lakes' ups and downs.

Lake levels have rebounded the past two years after a slump that began in the 1990s.
