DNR approves land gift increasing acreage at Craig Lake State Park in Marquette County

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The U.P. Land Conservancy has gifted the Department of Natural Resources nearly 1,300 acres of Marquette County highlands wilderness.

The property includes three parcels that made up the conservancy’s Peshekee Headwaters Nature Preserve, which lies along the eastern edge of Craig Lake State Park. The property contains nearly 90 percent of the watershed that fills Indian Lake, along with 10 miles of hiking trails.

DNR officials say the donation improves access to 120 acres of state-owned land, provides additional recreation opportunities, and ensures the land remains open to the public and enjoyed for generations to come.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
