MARQUETTE, MI— A multi-agency group created to study the removal of mining waste from fish spawning grounds off the coast of the Keweenaw will reveal its preferred plan on July 12.

The Buffalo Reef Task Force will present three final plans to move the copper tailings from Lake Superior whitefish and lake trout habitat at the meeting. They include building a retaining wall to contain the stamp sands at the original pile, as well as stamp sands dredged from the lake and beach; building a landfill in an upland area near the community of Gay for stamp sands removed from the lake and beach; and placing stamp sands removed from the lake and beach in the tailing basins at the former White Pine Mine in Ontonagon County.

The task force will discuss its preferred plan at the meeting, which takes place Tuesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. at Lake Linden-Hubble High School.
