Volunteers recognized for work on Grand Island

GLADSTONE, MI— Two Hiawatha National Forest volunteers have been awarded for their efforts.

Bob Kahl and Linda Rehorst—both from the Marquette area—have been given the 2022 Eastern Region Volunteer Award in the Enduring Service category.

Since 2011, the two have amassed more than 9,000 volunteer hours at the Grand Island National Recreation Area. Among many services performed over the years, Kahl and Rehorst have connected with island visitors to help them plan their stay on the island; made, stacked, and delivered firewood to campsites; conducted road and trail clearing and maintenance; painted; and installed new picnic tables and fire rings at campsites.

Hiawatha Recreation Specialist Brian Hinch nominated the pair for the award. He says the support they provide has been invaluable to the success of island operations.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
