Buffalo Reef Task Force wants to put stamp sands in landfill

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI— A multi-agency group created to study the removal of mining waste from fish spawning grounds off the coast of the Keweenaw wants to put the waste in a landfill.

The Buffalo Reef Task Force has issued its draft alternatives analysis for the disposal of stamp sands taken from the 2,200-acre reef. The task force decided to pursue construction of an upland landfill for the copper tailings. The report analyzes three disposal locations and scales of implementation.

The project cost is estimated at about $2.1 billion over the length of the project timeline.

Public comment on the selected option and analysis of alternatives will be accepted through March 1st. They can be sent to Stephanie Swart of EGLE’s Water Resources Division, at SwartS@michigan.gov.
