Road to Marquette County's Arfelin Lake washed out

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— Spring snowmelt and flooding have forced the temporary emergency closure of the Arfelin Lake Boating Access Site in Marquette County until road repairs can be made.

The Department of Natural Resources says culverts and the dirt access road have failed, and water is moving swiftly. The road was closed Friday afternoon after a pickup truck became stuck when a portion of the road collapsed.

The DNR maintains permitted access to the boating access site via the road. Staff is consulting with legal experts, landowners, residents and personnel from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Several creeks flow under the road in the low-lying area, which is subject to high water in spring.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
