A conversation with organizer Jon Teichman

If you're looking to fill a gap in your music collection, you may want to head to the second floor of the Ore Dock Brewing Company this Memorial Day weekend. Geoff and Jon’s Record Show returns May 22–25, offering a four-day celebration of music, media, and community organized by the NMU Vinyl Record Club and longtime collectors Geoff Walker and Jon Teichman.

“This is our twelfth year,” said Teichman, who recently stopped by Public Radio 90’s studios. “It’s a four-day, 50-plus-hour odyssey—vinyl records, CDs, cassette tapes, eight tracks, t-shirts, posters, stickers, postcards... a little bit of everything for everybody.”

More than just a marketplace, the event has evolved into a multimedia experience. Alongside thousands of records, guests can enjoy live performances from Jakey Thomas and returning favorites Marbin, plus a Sunday matinee and a pop culture trivia showdown curated by Teichman himself. “We cover everything from Pokémon to Michigan history to the golden age of cinema,” he said.

Listen to Teichman speak with Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth about the show:

The show also emphasizes sustainability and connection. Attendees are encouraged to trade or donate old media, and Teichman says rehoming items is part of the joy. This includes finding a rare jazz record or a copy of "Goodnight Vienna" with Ringo Starr saluting Gort from "The Day the Earth Stood Still," for example.

What keeps Teichman and Walker organizing the show year after year? “It’s the people,” Teichman said. “It’s the community. Folks travel from all over—across the U.P., downstate, even out of state. There’s nothing like watching someone light up when they find that one record they’ve been searching for.”

The four-day show starts on Thursday, May 22nd. Sunday will feature a matinee movie and pop culture trivia.

Geoff and Jon’s Record Show runs Thursday through Saturday, noon to close, and wraps up Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It’s free, family-friendly, and open to everyone. And if you're lucky, you might walk out with a treasure—or at least a good story.

Find more information about the record show at oredockbrewing.com or the Facebook event page. Teichman's Emporium store is online at mqtemp.com.

Kurt lives in Marquette with his family and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He loves music, games, jogging, being near water, and a fine cold brew coffee.
