An interview with Jennifer Huder and Nicole Johnson

The Walloon Writers Review celebrates its ninth edition this summer, continuing its mission to showcase the diverse voices and creative expressions rooted in the unique landscapes of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Founded and edited by Jennifer Huder, the publication brings together a vibrant collection of stories, poetry, and photography that capture the region’s character, ranging from first-time contributors to nationally recognized artists.

The ninth edition, co-edited with Glen Young, drew more than 300 submissions, a testament to the creative energy inspired by the area. With over 60 contributors featured, the publication continues its tradition of embracing a wide spectrum of experiences and artistic levels. Themes of exploration, lighthearted storytelling, and heartfelt reflections emerge throughout the edition, including the ever-popular "fish stories," which offer a recurring thread of humor and authenticity.

In collaboration with the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library, the Review will host a public reading event on Wednesday, August 7th, at 4 p.m. in the library’s Ray Leverton Community Room. The event brings together several contributors from the latest issue, offering attendees a chance to hear the work directly from the voices that created it. Local names familiar to the Public Radio 90 audience, such as poets Milton Bates and Lisa Fosmo, will be among the featured presenters. Attendees will also have the chance to view select photographic works and connect with the contributors in a casual and accessible setting.

Library staff see the event as an opportunity to connect literature and community. According to librarian Nicole Johnson, it not only supports the library’s mission of promoting literary engagement but also fosters inspiration among community members who may be exploring their own creative paths.

Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Huder and Johnson about the upcoming event:

As with previous editions, the Walloon Writers Review remains open to a wide variety of submissions, welcoming original work that reflects the beauty, stories, and personal experiences tied to northern Michigan and the U.P. Whether through poetry, prose, or photography, the publication encourages contributors to capture their connection to place and community.

The August 7th event is open to the public, with copies of the ninth edition available for purchase. It offers a rare chance to hear regional creatives share their work in their own voices, and perhaps, inspire new stories to be told in future editions.
