Classical guitarist Christopher Schoelen visited Public Radio 90 to share details about Deux Saisons, his duo with soprano Keri Lee Pierson (both of whom are also NMU Department of Music Instructors). The ensemble will appear at Northern Michigan University on Friday, September 5, as part of the Siril Concert Series.
Schoelen and Pierson first began performing together while living in Columbia, South Carolina, where Pierson sought an accompanist outside of the traditional piano partnership. The voice-and-guitar combination quickly proved a natural fit, leading to performances in informal venues such as breweries, coffee shops, and farmers markets. Over time, the duo expanded its repertoire from Renaissance and classical works into contemporary music, including new commissions written specifically for them.
Watch the duo perform "Outdoor Shadows" from David Leisner:
The name Deux Saisons, meaning “two seasons,” reflects both musicians’ deep ties to nature as well as a nod to the breweries where they began performing. Their programs often highlight contrasts between early music and newly composed works, sometimes placing centuries-old songs alongside modern premieres. They also tailor performances to the setting, whether presenting formal recitals, offering wine pairings with classical works, or creating sing-along moments in casual spaces.
Collaboration is a central part of their mission. Past projects have paired live music with visual art, nature-focused events, and even Earth Day fundraisers with conservation groups. Schoelen noted that these efforts aim to break down traditional divides between stage and audience, making classical music accessible in unexpected ways.

Listen to Schoelen speak with Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth about the concert and events:
At NMU, Deux Saisons’ September 5th visit will include a music appreciation presentation at 11 a.m., a masterclass at 1 p.m., and the evening concert at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall. The program will feature traditional voice-and-guitar repertoire alongside new works, including a world premiere by Pierson.
Looking ahead, the duo is developing a large-scale project titled Interconnect, which commissions new music from composers based in New York, Los Angeles, and the Dominican Republic. The project will culminate in a recording showcasing the wide range of contemporary writing for voice and guitar.
Tickets for the September 5 concert are available through the NMU Ticket Outlet here.
